History of Regional Climate Modeling

Land-Sea Mask

An example of the ability of a global climate model with about 200 km resolution to resolve the outline of the continental US is given below to the left. To the right is a representation of the US coast by a regional model with 50 km resolution. Notice that Florida is missing and the Great Lakes are reduced to a single near circular body of water in the global model.
