History of Regional Climate Modeling

Terrain Resolution

Examples of the impact of grid spacing on resolution of terrain features are given below. You will notice that at a resolution of 275 km the coastal mountains and central valley are not resolved. Note also the resemblence between the 10 km and 50 km plots as compared to the lack of resemblance between the 50 km and 275 km plots. Much is gained by increasing from 175 km to 50 km but less so for increase to 10 km.
